Hydrogen fuel cell bus demonstration: A logical progression towards clean transportation

Hydrogen is evolving to become a major source of fueling transportation. There is a wide range of sources from which we can produce hydrogen, including natural gas and also some renewable sources, therefore allowing for a reliable supply of clean energy. During the summer of 2012, CTE, a nonprofit organization will initiate the hydrogen fuel cell bus demonstration to showcase the potential of hydrogen. For two years, the hydrogen powered bus will operate alongside other buses that operate under the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Agency (BJCTA).

Air Liquide to supply hydrogen fueling infrastructure for Fuel Cell Bus Demonstration in Birmingham

Gaseous hydrogen and the compressing and dispensing bus refueling system will be provided by Air Liquide. Estimates show that the system will dispense a total of 12,500kg of hydrogen during the two year span. For making sure that buses on the system never run out on fuel, each fueling system will feature automated 350 bar hydrogen dispensing at the rate of one kilogram per minute.

This two year demonstration will be an illustration of how public transport will logically progress toward the use of hydrogen. This solution is definitely and economic one, but also ranks high in being sustainable. The advantage of this system is that it will be able to meet the future requirements and inherently operate through a centralized system, providing additional benefits.
