Urchin lamp: A cost effective and green prototype

Makropodis Konstantinos, a student at the University of the Aegean at Syros Island, came up with a prototype of the ‘Urchin Lamp’ as an internship assignment. The design of the lamp is simple yet effective, and involves a cluster of cardboard profiles stuck together in an artistic manner to create different shapes, generally ellipsoids, with a source of light. The profiles can be created from a single sheet of cardboard through laser technology or manual intervention.

The Urchin Lamp

When not required to provide light, it will appear as a monolithic structure that will decorate your house. And, when turned on, it will produce a soothing warm and cozy effect, throwing out partial rays of light through its pores. The effect is magical.

Apart from being a treat to the eyes, the ‘Urchin Lamp’ is purely eco friendly. The fact that it can be made out of cardboard profiles that are recycled, justifies its green features. It can be easily clubbed into any scheme of decoration, ranging from homes to offices to hotels and even beach shacks.

Another major plus point of the lamp is its cost effectiveness. Contradicting what the name suggests, ‘Urchin Lamp’ features a rich design and enjoys the reputation of being simple and versatile.
