The Urban Island prototype 01 to promote vertical expansion of human activity

Looking at the overall picture of the environmental imbalance that has been created by human activity, we can well conclude that solely promoting sustainability would not solve it all. Sustainability has to be amalgamated with effective management of human activities. In this regard, Erick Kristanto, has created the prototype of a floating platform that aims to accommodate maximum human activity within a designated area. This implies that the structure would limit horizontal expansion and promote vertical expansion, saving the earth more space.

Urban Island Prototype 01 / Erick Kristanto

The idea is centered around having two separate areas for natural green spaces and artificial activity spaces. The green area will be featured as a ground and there will be a floating platform that will host human activities. This will leave actually make the human dream of harmonizing sustainability with nature, come true, even while following the course of expansion.

The platform has an interesting design; its surface is landscaped with a circular loop, along which are all programs are hosted. These activities or programs cover the wide spectrum of sports, entertainment, education, commercial activities, etc. Jogging ramps, elevators, bike ramps and the like connect the ground with the platform through vertical circulations.

The concentration of all activities on a high rise platform will also allow people to successively take up activities in order or in a lap. For instance a person, who starts with biking up the ramp, can succeed it by running, then swimming, etc. Thus, we can conclude that one main purpose of the design is to keep humans as active as possible.

The ground floor on the other hand, will be rendered more flexible and will be devoid of any circulation hierarchy. The entire field will be used as a backyard where people can freely stroll and bask in the sun. Also if you are wondering where you’d land when you enter the island, you will be happy to know that the structure has a designated entrance for bikes along with a parking, work shop and also a prescribed area for cyclist to rest. But, one caution, the island does not have any parking for cars as part of its sustainable pursuit.

These multi dimensional interactions, which are supported by the island introduces us to a new league of future architecture. The forms and concepts used in the design are sure to make way for further innovations in the same direction.
