The Rot Riders: An eco minded crew that collects food waste

On every Sunday afternoons, a crew of eco minded trailer towing bike riders called ‘The Rot Riders’, ride through the neighborhoods of Kirksville, Missouri. The crew consists of five core riders and few volunteers who split into pairs and divide their routes to collect overfilled buckets of food waste from the selected lawns and porches.

The Rot Riders' Bike for Compost

The collected waste that serves as a raw material for compost piles, which can be used to nourish your garden is then taken to Truman’s University Farm compost pile for mixing with campus food waste, straw, manure, leaves and sawdust. Approximately three months are taken for break down by the resulting compost, which is afterwards availed to all local gardeners.

The idea of Rot Riders was developed as a project by the co founders Rodery Riney, Allison Siissom and Jonathan Lessing for student led grassroots environmentalism course at local college. The inspiration was taken from ‘Pedal People’, a waste collection company in Northampton, Massachusetts. According to Kyle LaVelle, a crew member, it’s easy to be a part of Rot Riders because all you need is a container to hold the organic waste. He also hopes that more and more people get involved in this project or on their own.

Since spring 2010, the crew has been making weekly rounds collecting waste from more than 40 apartments and houses. The program is gaining recognition and number is increasing of food waste donors. Recently, it finished as the runner up in Good Maker’s GOOD Citizenship challenge.
