Recycled structures offer people cheap accommodation while helping clean up the environment. In fact, such structures seem to be gaining in popularity as more people realize the need of recycling and its benefits. When placed in the hands of experienced designers and architects, the outcomes can be stunning. Such is the case with Avatar Architettura, an Italian architecture and industrial design firm. It has constructed a temporary structure that can be assembled in four days and can be used for different events.
Called the Recycled Pallet Pavilion, the structure is currently situated in Villa Romana’s garden, part of Florence’s German Institute of Culture. Measuring 100 square meters, the large shelter has been made out of precast diamond shaped wooden pallets with custom made joints. The result is a tasteful structure that blends with the environment owing to its wide use of wood and PVC membranes – opaque membranes for the roof and transparent ones for the walls.
The Recycled Pallet Pavilion is a perfect extension of Avatar Architettura’s objectives. Its research aims to find strategies that make use of recycled materials and flexible systems that can be used in the urban world. Considering so many urban locales house concrete eye sores and structures that are far from aesthetic, the pavilion is a breath of fresh air.
Avatar Architettura’s undertaking isn’t a first, however; there have been many instances where designers have used wooden pallets for their creations. Since most pallets end up in landfills once they’ve served their purpose, they add to the garbage problem. But, wood isn’t something that needs to be discarded as it can be reclaimed and used to build and create many amazing designs. Readers who’ve been following our coverage of wooden pallet uses may recall designs like the Dream Weaver Pavilion which provides people with shade and can serve as a space where lectures, picnics and recreational activities can take place.
