The Preservation Lamp for a wasteful world

The problem of waste generation and its control has led us to try to find ways whereby the issue can be tempered, or better yet, reversed. But it isn’t as easy as it appears and requires work on the part of all stakeholders. Artists seem to be on the forefront of recycling, creating not just decorative items but functional ones as well. Nicky Perez is just such an individual who constructs functional artistic pieces out of junk. Her Preservation Lamp is a fixture whose shade is made out of Ziploc bags.

The Preservation Lamp

To illustrate her concept of a wasteful world that’s only just begun recycling on a bigger scale, the lamp uses an excessive number of bags to enclose a CFL bulb. The concept is innovative and can be seen as a satirical play on people’s love for excess coupled with their desire to recycle. The lamp itself is pretty with horizontal stripes of red and blue encircling the shade. The green concept is further given fillip with the use of low energy compact fluorescent light bulbs. A tag to switch the lamp on and off has also been made out of Ziploc bags.

The artist, a student at the University of Texas in Austin, is a follower and creator of concepts which she fuses with her take on how people live today. Aside from the Preservation Lamp, she has crafted other interesting products like the Zabbaleen Pencil Pouches as a product design proposal for Egypt’s Zabbaleen community who collects garbage and creates usable items for profit. She studied the community’s culture and recycling methods to draw inspiration for her pencil pouches.

The young artist looks set to make an impact on society. With her novel projects, it wouldn’t be a surprise if she turns out to be an influence on the youth of today in their efforts to carry forward the concept of recycling.
