First plug in hybrid supercar Porsche 918 to hit roads next year

About two years ago this supercar, Porsche 918 hybrid concept was unveiled at Geneva Motor Show and after four months in the same year it officially headed for production. Now the car you see here is the bits and pieces assembled and tested by the Porsche team after arriving in Italy early this January.

The 918 is full parallel hybrid powered by a variant of the 4.6 liter V8 engine with an output of 570 horsepower and a 90kW electric motor that is fixed between engine and seven speed transmission. Apart from that another electric motor of 80kW is placed on the front wheels making the car effectively an all wheel drive. The motor alone is capable to make the car speed and drive for 16 miles, but in total combining the two electric motors and the V8 engine running at 9,000rpm the car has an impressive output up to 770hp and a torque of 553 pound per feet. In less than three seconds it is good to go from zero to 60mph and within nine seconds to 124mph and finally it has a top speed of 202 mph. The chassis weighs 485 pounds and is mix of aluminum and carbon fiber. For recharging, using a traditional 110 volt outlet around six hours will be taken by the 6.8kWh battery pack, but Porsche will be supplying a quick charging setup that will reduce the time to two hours.

The green factor of the 918 supercar is that if your liquid cooled lithium ion battery juiced up enough, a speed of 90 mph can be achieved without using a drop of fuel. It is priced at US$ 845,000 and will be available by September next year.
