Shampoos are among the worst offenders when it is a question of toxins and synthetics. Most well known brands contain sodium laurel sulphate , a chemical known by the industry to be a gentle cleanser for skin and hair. It is gentle in small doses but in large amounts can provoke skin, create allergic reactions and dry out the scalp. It is also a unrelenting pollutant that was formerly used as a pesticide that when released into waterways can be extremely poisonous to marine existence. Many of the cheaper brands are also filled with preservative parabens and industrial detergents with surfactants. However there are healthier, greener products available on the market, with a lot of organic brands producing eco-friendly shampoos and conditioners.
