Colonel recycles beach chairs into indoor lanterns

The colorful beach chairs of the 60s era were marvelous and were an eye catcher for many. These chairs had bright colored stripes, which were made of water resistant fabric and therefore, besides providing comfort they ranked high on utility and beauty. French design studio Colonel was inspired by these attributes and made the ‘Suzie’ lanterns by recycling beach chairs.

Vintage beach chairs repurposed as modern indoor lanterns

Colonel in a very significant manner brought the outdoors in. The founders Isabelle Gilles and Yann Poncelet have always used outdoor paraphernalia for their collection, which include the umbrella shaped ‘Faced’ floor lamps, the huge printed canvas and a metal chair dubbed ‘Caracas’. This time they came out with this Suzie collection of lanterns for decorating the insides of the home made from recycled beach chairs.

These lanterns are made from the plastic bands of campsite chairs, which are fastened around a metal frame and then hand stitched skillfully into place. In designing these lanterns they also highlighted their keen interest for bold geometric models, as each of the light consists of a unique mingling of varied colors and geometric patterns. Though some of the reused parts are visible at a close look of the lantern, but taken as a whole it proves out to be an exclusive piece for modern interiors.

These lamps are one of the most eco friendly items designed by Colonel. By recycling these vintage chairs the designers have not only brought back the memories of a bygone era, but also save the natural resources of the earth, by rescuing the chairs from being dumped as. These remarkably elegant lamps add fabulously to the green furniture items.
