Chongming Bike City: Swirling ramps with green lawns

JDS is a young design studio that seems intent on making it big! Its competition entry, the Chongming Bicycle Park, attempts to create what can be called an urban oasis in the vicinity of the city of Shanghai. It also has in it a visitor center, a multipurpose hall and a bike museum. An Ecowan project, it will be grassed and greened to present a beautiful sight and a natural feel. The whole structure is spiraling upward, and the gentle gradient of the ramps makes it a wonderful place for hiking and biking.

Swirling ramps form basis for Bike City

The visitor center has been made as the entry point. It also serves as the information point where the visitors could get to know everything and also seek clarification. It has been built to act as a symbol of the bicycle park and, therefore, is positioned right at the start. At the same time, it represents the relationship between sport, social awareness, technology, the evolution of biking and recreation.

The flagship display of the park, however, will be its bike museum. It will be designed to serve as a double helix. Thus, one can pedal up and ride down the spirals of the helix while admiring the display of the array of bicycles. The whole place will definitely be a strong message for a green way of life and will encourage the greater use of bicycles over other conventional transport, which utilizes fossil fuels.
