Chilean Police nabs glacier thief with five tons of ice

The melting glaciers have stirred quite havoc all over the globe, and if reports from Chile about glacier theft are true, it shows how unconcerned we are about the environment. The police in Chile nabbed a truck carrying illegal ice amounting to $6168.24. The ice was meant to be used in drinks served at the capital city of Santiago. Designer cubes were to be made out of five tons of pilfered ice. The cubes would be added in cocktails and alcoholic beverages before they were doled out.

Glacier thief arrested in Chile

The man arrested had obtained the ice from the Jorge Montt glacier located in the Patagonia region, and will be charged for damaging a national property. Jorge Montt is one of the fastest contracting glaciers in the world, which is shriveling at an alarming rate of half a mile every year. It is situated in the Bernardo O’Higgins national park.

If reports are to be believed then glacial ice is a hot favorite at pubs and bars because of its density and ability to stay frozen for a long time. Some also say that gases trapped in glacial ice make drinks fizzy.

Nonetheless, the whole issue boils down to one fact; global warming is being triggered by unethical human activity. While statistics point out that carbon emissions is the main culprit behind glacier loss, incidents such as glacier theft should be stopped to prevent any further damage to the eco system.
