Can airplanes be called eco friendly anymore?

In the modern world where the hype is about keeping environment eco friendly and green, airlines is also one of the industries which should aim at keeping the environment around us clean and pollution free. Fuel costs are the most important things associated with an airlines and with the rising costs of fuel, the aviation industry might be chewing their hands. The rising fuel costs are neither good for the consumer nor good for the industry itself. All the airlines are trying their best to cut the consumption of fuel and increase the efficiency of the planes, but it doesnโ€™t really see to be worth it with the domestic airline Allegiant Air. Allegiant was found to be one of the most efficient planes which consumed less fuel in the year 2010 according to a report released by International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT).

There remains a question that if the planes cannot be made to be more fuel efficient, what more can be done regarding the same? One of the answered subjects is based on the fleet which would help greener planes run in the runways.

The Airlines industry was soaring into heavy profits last year, but again this year, its future seems to have become clouded. The rising fuel prices seem to have cut off most of its profit percentage according to recent surveys conducted by financial records.

The prices of Jet Airways seem to have been increased by more than 20% in the previous two months, according to Air transport association the group that represents the largest airlines of the nation. Along with Jet airlines, United Continental Holdings Inc also started losing out on profits after it paid 34% more in fuel prices. American Airlines also suffered 436 million losses.

Rising costs

The low cost aero planes like Southwest Airlines Co. and JetBlue Airways Corporation were reported to earn small profits of about –$5 million and $3 million correspondingly after paying the rise in fuel costs. The rising cost in fuels has also made travelling by air very expensive. Prices of the economy classes have also increased along with the executive class.

The cheap flight programs have also seemed to be lessening by the day and less number of people is travelling by flight. So the question remains, is air still the most eco friendly means to travel after rise in fuel prices?
