Artist uses colorful currency for exquisite sculptures

Most of us put money to use for purchasing products, taking a vacation or saving it in the bank. The green we’re accustomed to is strictly for saving, buying or selling. Which is why Kristi Malakoff’s vision to create sculptures out of money is so interesting. The Canadian visual artist has produced some intriguing pieces by folding, pasting and cutting currency notes from around the world. She uses everything from the American dollar to Turkey’s lira.

Spectacular Three-Dimensional Money Sculptures

The stunning pieces are so well crafted that it’s difficult to notice the base is actually currency. The mix of various notes means that the sculptures are colorful while the versatility of paper allows her to sculpt different shapes like flowers, three dimensional polygons and a host of other designs. In fact, the renditions resemble cloth owing to their soft appearance and overall neatness.

Malakoff has for long been a fan of the arts and fantasy, having grown up with the likes of Disney and Roald Dahl influencing her world. She has also been fascinated by the ability to bring inanimate objects to life along the lines of CS Lewis’s Narnia series of books. As such, most of her work uses two dimensional media like currency, cereal boxes and photographs to create three dimensional objects. Since so much of the media she makes use of are entrenched in consumerism, she hopes to be able to attach humanism to the objects.

Malakoff seems moved to design a world with beauty and exquisiteness. This isn’t surprising as many artists strive to bring order to the chaotic world we live in. Her designs are whimsical yet meaningful and are so artfully accomplished that it is easy to see the influences that impacted her choice of career. She is now concentrating more on nature and using it to inspire new creations.
