‘Wendy’: A proatcive structure with sustainable functions

A cool structure with a cool name, Wendy is supposed to be a multi program structure; to be built by New York based HWNK. It will feature as an outdoor structure at the MoMa PS1 facility in Long Island City, Queens as a temporary installation. What distinguishes Wendy from several similar installations is its ‘proactive’ nature. This means that it is not just another ecology preserving structure that is the outcome of compulsion, but a truly magnificent and futuristic innovation that uses high tech materials integrated with sustainable functions.

Structures like this commonly create spaces that employ sustainable technology, but Wendy is more like an environment and not a space. Designed to cover a total area of 5000 square feet, it will extend out in the form of a spiky structure.

Now talking about the most integral part of Wendy; well the whole of it is composed of nylon fabric, which would be treated with titania nanoparticles spray. This spray will be helpful in neutralizing the impact of airborne pollutants. The mechanism that allows this is simple. The titania nano particles that coat the fabric when exposed to sunlight will trigger a catalytic reaction, which will neutralize nitrogen oxide. In order to cleanse maximum amount of air, the design of the structure has been amplifies with a greater surface area. In fact, it can clean air equivalent to taking off 260 cars off the road.

Also for keeping the temperatures cool during the summers, spiky arms are designed to push out blasts of cool air and also spray showers of water. To make it more active it has been accented with tools like wind, rain, shade and surprisingly even music. Imagine strolling around the courtyard during summers, draped in cool mist and listening to your favorite music.
