Best water powered gadgets

When we talk about renewable sources of energy, we usually factor in wind, solar and tidal sources. While water is also widely used, being a limited resource especially in today’s water hungry times, its can be unfeasible. But, this hasn’t stopped manufacturers from designing small gadgets that run on water. The quantity of water used is reasonable and these gadgets function like those powered by electricity.

Eco Electric

Devices that monitor your water consumption abound the market, but most of them run on electricity. With Eco Electric, users can receive inputs on how much water they’ve consumed, without the use of conventional power. What’s even better is that this handy little gadget generates its own power from grey water, using nothing from your power source. It has an inbuilt turbine that filters grey water to a degree. The recycled water is then used to generate energy for its operation. The device is also upgradable in terms of software and features.

EcoLights for your eco life

Lighting in ground pools requires hefty wattage, which can substantially add to your electricity bill. With EcoLight, users can breathe free as the concept lighting system makes use of an inbuilt turbine that generates the electricity needed to power the LED lights. It uses the flow of water to complete the process, making EcoLight a very environmentally friendly pool lighting system.

H2O water powered shower radio

The H2O water powered shower radio lets you enjoy music when you’re in the bath without using additional energy or conventional batteries to function. A micro turbine enables electricity to be generated through the flow of water. All a user has to do is attach the system to a shower unit. The water pressure generates the turbines to produce electricity, which is stored in an internal rechargeable battery, needed to run the radio.

Eco friendly water powered clock

Do away with clocks that run on AA batteries and replace them with the Bedol Wall Wave clock. This innovative time piece has electrodes that when immersed in water, harvest energy from compound particles. The clock needs to be filled with water and will run for six months. You won’t lose time when refilling it either, as an inbuilt memory chip keeps time.

HydroWind: A dual mode turbine for campers

While generating renewable energy is vital considering the limited sources of conventional forms, there needs to be a guarantee that the power supply is uninterrupted. Most of us know that green energy doesn’t have the same density as that produced by fossil fuels, which is why it is necessary that more than two sources are combined. HydroWind is a device that harnesses wind and water to generate hydroelectricity of up to 12 volts. Though the output is less, it can be used to power LED lights and small gadgets.

Water powered shower light illuminates your wash

ECOlight, designed by Sylvania is a water powered LED shower head. Light is emitted when energy generated via a small water turbine is produced. The greater the water pressure, the more the intensity of the LED. The device also has temperature sensors equipped so that when the water is at 78 degrees Fahrenheit, the light glows blue and when the temperature is over 105.8 degrees Fahrenheit, it glows red.

POWA: Wash your car and power it too with hydroelectricity

EVs need a substantial amount of energy in order to operate. What if you could recharge the batteries of your car while washing it? Designer Gregoire Vandenbussche has created a device called POWA Water Generator, which when placed between a hose, uses a water turbine to generate electricity, which can then be used to recharge your batteries directly. The only drawback is that washing a car uses a lot of water so while you’ll be able to charge your car, you’ll end up using quite a bit of water.

Water powered calculator

Most electronic gadgets run on electricity or batteries. When it comes to the latter, it can be cumbersome having to change batteries every so often. But, thanks to the water powered calculator that has an inbuilt reservoir, which when filled with water, can power the device for a month.

Mini Hydro Turbine: A long shower for a recharged cellphone battery

Jin Woohan has designed the Mini Hydro Turbine, which can generate electricity to power cellphones and other small devices. Users can choose to connect it to a wall outlet or use it to charge batteries. Just attach the system to a water tap and see it work its magic.

Self powered autonomous robot to monitor leaks in water pipes

Kaunsthochschule Berlin has invented an autonomous robot that’s self powered to detect leaks in pipes, which could help towns and cities save gallons of water lost due to faulty and leaky pipes. Called TubeBot, the device ultrasonically scans a piping system and sends data to a base where workers can locate the precise point of the leak and work to fix it.
