Surculus by Nick Squires: Sprinkling life to your garden

Maintaining and tending to a garden is a full time job. And especially, if one maintains a lawn, a lot of care has to be taken and the watering times are very important. If the water supplied is less, the lawns dry out. If it is too much, there is water-logging which can lead to the destruction of the root hairs. An intelligent and optimum sprinkler, is an ideal way to meet the water needs of lawns and Surculus is the best you could possibly dream of getting at an economical price.

The Surculus is a water sprinkler system that uses a Li-ion battery to power itself. This battery gets charged through solar energy and the best part is that the sprinkler can be controlled remotely, in a wireless manner. The bulbous design is beautiful and elegant. It is aesthetic and simple too. All the controls necessary are placed on top for easy access. The controls too have been kept to the minimum, making the Surculus easy to handle and use.

Right on top is a timer that can be set to dispense water at given time intervals. It is gardening knowledge that the best time to water the lawns is at about 5am. Instead of rising that early, you can just set the timer and sleep peacefully. The controls on top are protected by a twistable cap.

Right under the controls, running down the center are two tubes. One of the tubes houses the wiring and cabling that is necessary for the connecting the battery with the solar panel with the timer. The other tube is used for withdrawing water for dispensing. Depending on the extent to which the tap is opened, the force of the water being dispersed is controlled.

The Surculus is easy to move and place at different locations on the lawns. It has three long spikes acting as legs. These ensure that it gets planted firmly in the lawns. The base area of the inner body has been designed at a height so that it does not come in contact with the lawns where it is placed. This ensure that there are no dead spots on the grass where the base touched the lawns.

Since it is solar-powered, the sprinkler becomes another ‘green’ object in your garden. Being a project of the “Design Week”, hosted by the University of Derby, the Surculus was the brain child of the 2nd year students. It stands testimony to the fact that creative minds working for a ‘green’ cause can really bring about wonderful transformations and changed.
