You would have to be a very brave man to enter a car in the Le Mans 24 Hours challenge with its gas tank filled only to half the level that is being used by everyone else on the track. You would have to braver to then go on and say that your car will still tango with the best despite its tank half empty. Well, either brave or in the case of Nissan DeltaWing, we can simply call it brilliant. Guess, the folk at Nissan the guys who always see the tank ‘half full’.
But the DeltaWing intends to showcase at the famous Le Mans track that fuel efficiency can be doubled by using cutting edge technology that will allow its experimental DeltaWing to compete with all the other cars with full tanks at the same speeds and for the same length of time. The confidence that Nissan exudes when it talks about pulling this feat off is amazing and considering that these are real-time race conditions, it even borders on cocky. But Nissan have every reason to be upbeat as the DeltaWing sports Nissan 1.6-liter, turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine which will significantly improve fuel efficiency.
Also on the side of the DeltaWing is the fact that the designers of the car have shed most of the unwanted weight and have reduced aerodynamic drag to such a large extent that it allows the car to clock up speeds and mileage that other cars would do with twice the amount of fuel. Remember that Nissan already uses its DIG-T (Direct Injection Gasoline – Turbocharged) engine in road cars like the Nissan Juke DIG-T. With further development in such technology, we can not only cut down on gasoline consumption, but also on carbon emissions.
No matter which way you look at it, this is a venture which we would like to see Nissan succeed in and while the DeltaWing does not compete for the silverware at Le Mans, we sure hope it sees the chequered flag in style!
