Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV Power Box reserves power from EVs to meet emergency

Mitsubishi is prepping up to introduce an ingenious i-MiEV Power Box to grab and store electricity from its EVs for outside uses. The Power Box is really a car-to-grid system, which will let users set aside a little amount of energy for meeting with the emergency needs like power outage in houses or offices.

Mitsubishi i-MiEV Power Box

The i-MiEV Power Box is meant for the owners of Mitsubishi’s MINICAB MiEV and i-MiEV to store power for extra use. The 25lbs device comes with an option to directly plug into the EVs’ charging outlet and thus to gather power. The device converts the power into AC 100V, which can be used to power phone charger, refrigerator and the entire household for hours.

Well, a fully charged EV can furnish up to 1500 watts of electricity to the i-MiEV Power Box. As per the Japanese car maker, 1500 watts is sufficient to power up a normal Japanese household for an entire day. As a whole, the Power Box works like a portable inverter that can store electricity and power up your household in case of emergency situations.

Mitsubishi will start shipping the Power Box late April this year. The device is to come for a price about 149,800¥ (approximately $1,785). The Japanese automaker hasn’t exposed any intention to sell the product outside the country. Anyway, everyday use will cause a negative impact on the EV’s battery, Mitsubishi has warned the users. The company just suggests the product only to cope with emergency power demands. Everyday use will not be good for the very performance of your electric car and its battery pack.
