Kiwi House is a tiny sustainable dwelling nestling amidst the Montana Mountains

In times when most of us fancy having bigger houses, living extravagant lives; not many would like getting out of the way to build themselves a small tiny house, unless, of course, they don’t have money. But, sit back and think for a moment, can small and tiny also mean beautiful and cozy? Well, to me, and Stephen and Julie Shea, the couple who own the Kiwi House in Bozeman, Montana, a tiny house could in many ways delight you more than possessing a large mansion.

Kiwi House

The Kiwi House owners are not only proud because their house is beautiful and comfortable, but also because it is in every sense, an eco friendly dwelling. Stephen and Julie, had always liked Montana and New Zealand alike and, therefore, decide to have a home at each of these places. Particularly for their Kiwi House, they sought to build a dwelling, which would occupy minimal space, require minimal maintenance and yet be a house of high quality. This is where; Comma-Q Architecture came to their rescue and designed a home that claims 823 square feet only.

The house is oriented to directly face the sun and is centered around a hearth. Photovoltic panels capture the sun’s energy and the interior of the house has been given a super insulation construction, which considerably keeps the house off the grid. For the insulation part, firstly, the public wall of the house has been constructed using local Montana stone and reclaimed redwood has been used for the other walls.

Pictures of the house clearly depict that being small does is not always synonymous with congestion, but tiny spaces too can have openness, if the correct architectural proportions are put into place. The Kiwi House is a good example of sustainable architecture that does not compromise on comfort and aesthetics and also helps save the precious resources of the environment.
