How to connect a rainwater harvesting system to roof eaves

There are many ways to complement the construction of roof with sustainability. Rain water harvesting is one of the most appreciated modern ways to make a normal roof top sustainable. The rain water recycle with a syringe is low cost solution that harvests rainwater, recharges fresh water and meets the budget and aspirations of coastal inhabitants. This model can be replicated in any coastal area using the existing housing plan without digging additional wells or ponds. It is waiting to be given a trial by you. Here are the instructions that will help you in recycling rain water.

Complexity level: Moderate

Estimated cost: Approximately Rs 20,000

Resources required

  1. 3 PVC based syringe pipes
  2. A tank with a minimum capacity of 500 liter
  3. A storage reservoir
  4. Motor
  5. 3 suction pipes
  6. Foot valves

Instructions

1. Detailed structural discussion

This unit consists of a tank with a minimum capacity of 500 liter with a daily dewatering capacity of 400 liter. It uses three dedicated PVC based syringe pipes of two inch diameter to inject water from overhead sources down into a storage reservoir at 25 feet below the ground. It uses a 1.5 HP single phase, 230 V motor to pump up the stored water during dewatering. Individual foot valves are fitted to the three suction pipes of one inch diameter which are connected to the network for dewatering. The foot valves help in priming the motor and filtering out the solid particulates, sand and contaminants from the water prior to being pumped up during dewatering.

2. Build the pit

Considering the months when rainfall is recorded maximum, you can start working to install the rainwater recycling unit. Build a pit of dimension 6 feet wide and 8 feet deep. Complete making the pit in summer before the rain comes and fills the empty pit with sand, brought from the river.

3. Lining the pit above ground and inserting pipes

Line the pit with a border wall, 3 feet high and 2 feet deep. This portion above the ground is to be used as tank if made leak proof. Next, insert six pipes 16 feet in length into the tank going deep through the sand and soil below.

4. Release water

The rooftop rainwater is stored in pressure tank and with the help of PVC pipes. Then rout the water from the roof of the building under pressure into these pipes to be transferred to the underground storage. These pipes act as syringe pipes for injecting water into the ground. The rainwater syringe zone is built to generate an exclusive fresh water level below the sea level at low tide. Unlike other rainwater systems, this arrangement does not need the construction of open wells. The arrangement of closely spaced vertical syringe pies ensures a minimal footprint unlike the larger area taken up by horizontal feed systems.

5. Pumping out water

Whenever required, the water can be pumped out. Starting with a depth of 8 feet, the injected water can be used to recharge ground water upto a depth of 230 feet. The average installation of the unit is less than Rs 20,000. This water is then pumped out using a motor or hand pump. The water that comes out is surprisingly crystal clear and fit for drinking. Remember, it is the natural water that you are filtering in order to use when required. Dig the pit during summers to avoid unnecessary mess. Pump only as much as required. Do not forget that it is precious and has to be used wisely. Make sure that you have properly fitted each pipe before releasing water.

6. You can install a rain water shower as well

You can directly use the rain water for shower. For this you can attach the main inlet pipe of the rainwater to the shower system of your bathroom. Getting drenched in rain is what everyone likes. The rainfall shower gives you a natural experience of getting soaked in rain indoors. It imitates the real rainfall, supplying you a luxurious showering effect. You can afford this shower system now unlike the old days. The shower can be one of the most relaxing experiences but it all depends on the type of showerhead that you have.
