Household items that can make excellent eco-friendly seed starters

If you are looking for seed starting pots to grow a garden in your home, consider repurposing some items in your home as seed starters, rather than buying them from a store. They would not only be as effective as the real seed starters, but also offer an eco-friendly alternative to fancy starter kits. Here we have listed some such household items that you can use for the same purpose.

Cardboard Egg Carton

Do not throw those empty egg cartons. Simply fill them up with soil and drop a seed into each section to create an excellent DIY seed starter. The only drawback of egg cartons is that it absorbs a lot of water. Therefore, you will have to water the seedlings at regular intervals throughout the day.

Paper Coffee Cups

Most of us use paper coffee cups at home or in the office. If you have a ready stash of these cups, consider using them as seed starters. Make sure to punch some holes at the bottom of the cups beforehand for water drainage.

Folded Newspapers

Instead of throwing old newspapers in the trash, consider repurposing them as seed starters. Fold the newspaper appropriately to create a pocket like cup. Add the soil and seeds to it, water it and place the cup in a sunny area.

Toilet Paper Rolls

Toilet Paper Rolls

Like newspaper, there is no need to throw those old toilet paper rolls. Simply place the rolls upright, fill them with soil, add some seeds and water them to create your own DIY seed starter at home. Like cardboard, you would need to water often to prevent the seedlings from drying.

Ice Cube Trays

No refrigerator is complete without an ice tray. If you have a couple of old ones lying around, consider repurposing them as seed starters, similar to the egg carton. The good thing about using an ice cube tray as a seed starter is that you do not need to water the seedlings often, as the tray helps the soil retain water for longer periods.

Cartons and Cans

All those juice cartons and soda cans need not to end up in the trash. You can make excellent seed starters using these items. Cut out a portion of the cartons to create an open box that would serve as a planter. You can also cut out the top of an old can, fill it with soil and sprinkle the seeds into it for a great DIY planter.

There is no need to opt for expensive seed starters for your garden. You can easily repurpose items like newspapers, toilet rolls, paper cups, old cans and cartons for the same purpose.
