DIYer creates speaker out of old horn and PVC

Rummaging through junk and so called discarded materials can give you some great pointers on what to do with old stuff. Usually, the first thought that pops into mind is to have a garage sale or donate items to the needy. But a little bit of creativity and hard work can go a long way in transforming old products into new and interesting pieces. Take the example of a Flickr user, who posted pictures of a project that involved using an old bike horn and an iPhone to create a speaker.

Bike Horn iPhone Speaker

The Flickr user, named lowtechatmo, made an amp using PVC and a used bike horn. When the iPhone is docked onto the amp, the horn emits whatever it is the phone is playing. According to the maker, the amp amplifies certain sounds better, like vocals.

The old retro horn had enough threading on the end, which enabled it to be easily screwed into the PVC. It sits snugly inside and directly in front of the iPhone’s small speaker. The ends of the PVC amp are open to allow for better sound displacement and letting the treble out. As the horn is pretty weighty, it prevents the iPhone from tipping backwards.

Aside from the DIY horn cum amp project, lowtechatmo has completed another project, this time with nothing to do with phones and horns. The DIYer made a bicycle rack out of reclaimed pellets. The project required no assembly or modification and involved just leaning the two pellets together. According to the DIYer, the rack is pretty secure and can just about accommodate four bikes.

DIY projects are a great way to get yourself involved in fun ideas. They’re relatively easy to accomplish and make for creative concepts. Those like lowtechatmo’s speaker project are not just unique but functional as well, meaning that you can extend the life of old products with a bit of creativity.
