99K House: A turning point in affordable and green housing technology

The 99K House is a competition for sustainable single family houses. As the portmanteau suggests, participants are expected to build a house spending a maximum of $99,000. In constructing the budget house, sustainable, local and recycles materials are to be predominantly employed. The 99K house competition is an obvious reproduction strategy for Houston’s Fifth Ward, which faced large foreclosures in the recent crisis in the housing market.

It is indeed a great idea to build sustainable houses as the world is under immense energy crisis threat. The participants of the competition were requested to construct economical 1400 square foot houses with high energy efficiency and natural look. The house should only have three bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and it should not be 50 ft. by 100 ft larger. The contest was sponsored by the American Institute of Architects, Houston Chapter and Rice Design Alliance.

Among several entries, the jurors picked up Kate Cudney, Tom Mulica, Robert humble, Joel Egan, Ben Spencer, Owen Richards and Hybrid/ora in the final round. The Hybrid/ora from a team of Seattle, Washington based designers grabbed the 99K House award. Later, design of the winner project copied to build houses in Houston, Texas. The house could be easily built with sustainable and recycled materials from the local areas.

Many participants of the 99K House contest developed many stunning eco friendly houses within a budget of $99,000. Many chose a prefab industrial Quonset construction system, which can be efficiently used as both the wall and roof of the house. The sustainable material is abundantly available on the outskirts of Houston. It is quite easy to build a house with the material. Quonset system is highly energy efficient as well. Its high reflectivity and recycled nature make it more efficient.

99K House designers made of use several long term sustainable methods to build their budget houses for the contest. For stack ventilation, high to low volume collective spaces were developed; meanwhile, the foundation system of the houses capitulated little resistant coating thanks to the application of the Quonset system.

Winner team of the 99K House competition has done a great job. They have developed a compact house that suits the best for the occupants. The stacked plan features one to four bedrooms and it converts simply to two 600 SF duplex units. Well, the solid cover diminishes first costs and over energy use.

The 99K House contest was certainly a great event for promoting green house technology in Houston. People were quite excited to see eco friendly houses that feature great environmentally feasible features.
