The Green Wheel brings NASA concept to earth bound folks

Industrial designers are one of the most important assets when it comes to technology, architecture and product design. Not only do they construct functional and aesthetically pleasing products and virtually almost anything that we use today, but many do so keeping the environment and sustainability in mind. An example is Libero Rutilo, an Italian industrial designer, who designed The Green Wheel, a rotary hydroponic system. The concept was first developed by NASA to provide astronomers and space travelers with a source of fresh herbs and salads.

Green Hydroponic Wheel Concept by Libero Rutilo

Space travelers spend months touring the skies and it’s a fact that they can’t really avail of fresh foods during journeys. NASA’s rotary garden gave them the opportunity to do just that and now with The Green Wheel, ordinary folk can also do the same. The hydroponic garden is modeled along the lines of a traditional garden and allows you to grow a variety of herbs and salads.

If you love all things organic, then this device can help you grow the salads and herbs of your choice without much additional cost. What’s even better is that the rotary garden is very aesthetically pleasing and wouldn’t look out of place in a home. The fact that the herbs are arranged around the LED lights makes The Green Wheel fit enough to be a showpiece.

The circular device incorporates LED lights and a motor that drives the garden and lets you grow your herbs with ease. Rutilo’s design sees the plants get hydrated automatically with a water reservoir and a pump. The perforated inner wheel supports the cover vases while coco fiber in the vase holds the plants and roots. The system can be managed with an app via a tablet or smartphone. You can control the temperature, light intensity and even the water level of the device.
