Why are Indians splurging on green goods?
Indians are increasingly evolving as the leaders in consumption of green products. Letโs find out how and what has made this possible.
- An awareness? โ Studies and surveys according to the Greendex suggest that Indians lead more healthy and sustainable lives than anyone else. However the paradox remains true that Indians think that most of the eco-awareness sweep is mostly hogwash and exaggerated. In fact 40% os the population feel this way. The reason why Indians have eco-friendly lifestyles is more because of cultural factors which suggest that should be sensitive to the environment rather than concerns of global warming. The perception that environmental problems are exaggerated may however lead to a barrier in effective action.
- Corporate social responsibility โ A study carried out by Nielsen via internet in 58 countries saw Indians top the list with three-quarters saying that they are willing to shell out more money for green goods. Nielsen suggests the study goes on to show that the government bill making corporate social responsibility a mandate for many companies is working out to be a positive step . More and more businesses are giving it as much importance as any other function in their organization. On the other hand, many European Union countries lagged behind in this aspect due to their cynicism to keep businesses and environment separate.
- Adopting healthier lifestyles โ Indians are growing increasingly aware of natural and organic foods by the hour. A lot of Indian food is laden with spices and Indians are aware that although the food might taste good, a lot of nutrients are lost in preparing such food. Indians want to maintain healthier lifestyles and work on their body structures by eating right. They are consuming organic products more and know well to look for labels and certifications.
- Expanding middle class โ The rapid expansion of the middle class might be termed as another factor in the growing splurge of green goods in India. The middle class makes most of the rules in the country . The people of this section of the society and their change and increase in purchasing power is another important factor. People do not mind paying more for goods if they are green. They just look at it as a healthier option of life rather than an expense.
