University of Minnesota unveils new solar-powered car

Eco Factor: Zero-emission electric car powered by renewable energy.

The University of Minnesota‘s Solar Vehicle Project team has unveiled their new solar-powered car for the 2010 American Solar Challenge. Dubbed Centaurus 2, the vehicle will take part in the 1100 mile race from Tulsa, Okla. to Chicago.

The team is one of the 18 teams participating in the challenge. The car is a completely new generation design from the university’s previous eight solar vehicles. The most noticeable change is the new design that incorporates drastically improved aerodynamics and solar array encapsulation to maximize speed and range for the race.

The current car is just over 3 feet tall, about 16 feet long and nearly 6 feet wide. It weighs about 400 pounds.
