Eco Factor: Sustainable hospital complex seeking LEED Gold Certification
Stockholm will soon see a hospital that claims not only to be the world’s most advanced hospital, but will also be loaded with green features. Designed by Tengbom Architects, the new Karolinska Solna University Hospital seeks LEED Gold certification, in addition to the gold level of the Swedish certification system Miljöklassad Byggnad.
It is anticipated that the hospital developer Skanska will incorporate durable, recyclable materials based on renewable sources for the construction. The ultramodern hospital will provide the best modern facility the patient to promote speedy recovery. Special care will be taken to reduce its environmental impact as much as possible and make it carbon neutral.
The structure is designed to be durable and flexible for new advances in technology, which means it will function perfectly for next 100 years. Letting maximum daylight in will help save energy, while a controlled ventilation system will also help improve indoor air quality. Being built with the aim to give first priority to the patients, the hospital offers private room to the patient and their families. The construction work of the SEK 14,5 billion ultramodern hospital is expected to start this summer and it will be fully functional by 2015.
