Solar powered speed sensors will ensure safe and secure travel in Ohio

Traffic Management System of Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) with the recent improvements has made it safe and faster for the drivers to reach their destinations on time. Over one thousand solar powered SpeedInfo Vehicle Radar sensors have been positioned next to all important metro corridor state and interstate roads through a partnership with SpeedInfo, Inc.

After every one mile in urban areas and two miles in rural, mounted on existing signage or light poles, the sensors will continuously collect information about traffic speed on every major interstate. The data, with no latency virtually, will be forwarded to the server of SpeedInfo Traffic Data through the AT&T Wireless data network. Information on travel time will be distributed to highway advisory radio, also guiding the involved ODOT employees with traffic management and analysis and to the expanding digital message signs network throughout the state. Before delivering the data to customers via Internet it will be formatted by the servers.

Due to important projects of highway construction statewide, it is critical for freeway management to insure the smooth flow of commerce and to provide secure and safe travel to the drivers of Ohio. A significant investment has been made by the State of Ohio and ODOT by enhancing freeway management, availing information of travel times to drivers and empowering them with up to the minute traffic flow.
