SIM-WIL sets the bar high for EV driving range at 218 miles

Car manufacturers are persistently optimizing the driving range for their electric cars. Like an answer to their prayers, SIM-DRIVE, a Japanese company, has made a breakthrough with its EV and even broken its own record. The SIM-WIL, a super fast electric vehicle, has set the bar high by being able to go 218 miles on just a single charge.

Electric car prototype increases range to 218 miles

The company had earlier developed a car named SIM-Lei with a record breaking driving range of 190 miles when fully charged. But SIM-WIL has surpassed its predecessor by a full 28 miles. It’s aerodynamic owes its speed in part to in wheel motors. It’s also a little toned down compared to its Star Wars inspired predecessor. SIM-WIL is reported to have a maximum range of 218 miles on the JC-08 cycle. For the sake of assessment, the Nissan Leaf manages about 124 miles on the same Japanese cycle.

Although SIM-WIL is a little less efficient than the SIM-Lei, with 66 Wh/Km versus 99.7 Wh/Km to the latter, it can cover more distance. The reason it can achieve the said distance is due to its 154.3-lb weight reduction and a larger 35.1 kWh battery. Its outer dimensions have also changed significantly with the design team reducing over 21 inches from the length and adding 4.5 inches to its width. The result is an added capability of carrying five passengers in comfort.

One of the other performance changes made is in its accelerative abilities. SIM-WIL’s predecessor prototype could reach the 60 mph mark in just 4.8 seconds whereas the new model manages it at 5.4 seconds. And what it can’t make up for in acceleration, it does so with a reduction in vibration known as torque ripple.

SIM-DRIVE, with the help of 26 partners, plans to build yet another vehicle in the near future with vehicle to house and vehicle to grid capabilities.
