Eco Factor: Gas-guzzling car transformed into a zero-emission EV.

A team of students from the Weaver Academy’s Advanced Technology Program who are currently learning the basics of automobile technology have entered the SMARTT Challenge, or Students Making Advancements in Renewable Transportation Technology Challenge, with an electric vehicle converted from an old $400 gas-powered Mazda RX7.

The team had to buy an electric motor, batteries and the control system that turns the vehicle into a green zero-emission ride. The transformation process took six months, dozens of students and the expertise of three instructors. The results were pleasing, as the team walked away with six trophies including honorable mention and rookie of the year. Next school year the team is planning to build a solar-powered recharging station for the car.
