Eco Factor: Sustainable skyscraper made from recycled materials harvests solar energy.
Architects Robert Cardenas, Andres Fuentes and Barkev Daron at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, have proposed a new vertical housing development to relocate people living in Jakarta’s “kampongs”. Dubbed Rehabitat, the sustainable development has been designed as a series of stacked boxes attached to a central core.
Each of the box-shaped houses is attached perpendicular to the one on the top of it to create different units, each of which can benefit from multiple panoramic views. The green community includes a recycled center that processes a great portion of Jakarta’s waste.
The structure will be constructed off-site and transported to the site by train. In addition to the use of recycled materials, the sustainable development will also include photovoltaic panels for on-site energy generation and water collection systems to capture rainwater for use within the community.
