Eco Factor: Sustainable design uses modern agricultural technology to help nature flourish.
‘Engineered Biotopes’ is London based teammates Anthi Grapsa Konstantinos Chalaris’s attempt at introducing some greenery into Greek city of Piraeus. The team has visualized Piraeus Tower that uses modern agricultural technology that allows nature to flourish and grow on its façade in a city with little vegetation cover compared to its population.
Piraeus Tower successfully adapts nature to its concrete structure using its façade. The first two floors of the building contain glass tubes to nurture seedlings. The rest of the floors use biotopes that are largely robotic cranes with especially designed modules to grow plants. The robotic crane connected to a computer keeps repositioning the module according to change in weather conditions, sunlight and water consumption.
These modules create a green microcosm that brings inhabitants closer to nature and also help the local plants and birds thrive on it.
