Pharox Solar kit facilitates increase in students’ pass percentage

Lemnis Inc., a San Francisco-based company which deals in sustainable LED lighting technology, has announced that it has received official word that its Pharox Solar kit, which the company had given as donations to students in Zambia, has had a positive effect on students.

Pharox Solar Kit Donations Help Dramatic Increase in Zambian Students' Test Scores

It’s been reported that Kalangala Basic School saw a 52 percent rise in the percentage of students who passed their 9th grade exam after they received the kit to help them study after dark. That’s an increase of 22 percent in 2010 to about 74 percent in 2011.

Last year, Empowered by Light – the company that distributed the kit – kept itself busy by supplying more than 1,000 Pharox Solar Kits through its Solar: Zambia project to various villages in the country. Now, the company hopes to reach a target of distributing 5,000 of the kits to more villages. By doing so, residents can be provided with a cheaper electric lighting solution for activities like reading and studying. Normally, families depend on candles and kerosene lamps for work which can be expensive and heighten the risk of respiratory disease, burns and fire.

The Pharox Solar kit is a combination of a spherical LED lamp and a built-in USB port, a charger and a solar panel. By using its simple repositioned solar panel, the kit’s battery can be fully charged in less than 8 hours. Depending on which level of brilliance the light is set to, it can supply 8 to 45 hours of illumination. If the highest level of lighting is used, the lamp can illuminate an area of 30 square feet.

The kit’s USB port can be used for charging cell phones, tablets or MP3 players. It’s also fitted with a charger indicator, a replaceable battery and a 5.5mm DC input for external power.
