Eco Factor: Eco-friendly library designed to obtain LEED certification.

Knowledge is the biggest power and gaining is sitting inside a building boasting its green credentials is a different feeling altogether. An eco-friendly library has been planned on a site where presently a one-story facility resides. Glen Oaks Branch Library is designed to be a high performance, LEED certified building that has a beautiful relationship with nature. Designed by Marble Fairbanks, the library will comprise of reading rooms on all three levels, a cybercenter, and community meeting spaces.

The new 18,000 sq ft building has a double-height space that apart from bring in ample of natural light also makes a visual connection between the plaza surface and the ceiling surface. The three strip skylights in the plaza bring light through a contoured ceiling to define more specific reading areas in the reading room below. The channel glazing and fiber cement board paneling not only adds to the aesthetics, but also blends it in harmony with the surroundings. The ground surface doubles as an outdoor public space and as the roof of the cellar below.
