Low emission Vito Euro 5 taxi will cost less to London cabbies

London is making all efforts to become a green city and in one such endeavor it was announced that from January, 2012 no black cab that has been on the road for over 15 years, will be issued a licensed by The Taxi and Private Hire Office. Taking advantage of this directive, Mercedes has announced that it will give all drivers a discount on the purchase of Mercedes Benz Vito taxi. Vito was approved by the Public Carriage Office as the licensed black cab of London in 2008.

Mercedes-Benz initiative to help London cabbies deliver cleaner air

What makes Vito the chosen car is its electric features, including electric doors, electric steps, etc. that make it an eco city car. Transport for London (TfL) and Mercedes Benz collectively took the decision of offering Vito at a discount. On purchase of the low emission Vito Euro 5 taxi, drivers will get a discount of $2 372.4 (£1,500).

Now the question is how will Mercedes recover the discount cost? Well, as a smart move this discount is being offered in exchange for carrying Mercedes Benz advertisements on the cabs for 18 months.

Considering statistics, road transport is said to be responsible for around 80 percent of the airborne PM10 pollution in central London. This part of London is the worst air quality and 10 percent is the contribution by the black cabs. Therefore the collective efforts of TfL, Mercedes Benz and The Taxi and Private Hire Office are sure to reap benefits for London, ridding it from the extra load of pollution carbon emissions.
