Let your heart play that music

Well, since human beings are constantly evolving, so are their inventions and innovations. The latest being the possibility of charging of an Apple iPod with your own heart. Sounds strange? It is, yet very realistic and practical. Nanotechnology or a nanogenerator embedded in a chip of a size of a postage stamp will do the trick. This technology is based on power of millions of zinc-oxide nanowires that generate electricity upon any body movement, even a heartbeat. This means no batteries or electric units required to charge the device and hence lighter gadgets to carry around. These nanowires are so small that 500 could fit in a human hair.

Doctor Zhong Lin Wang is the lead researcher on this project from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. According to Dr. Wang, once the technology is up and running, there might be a lot of other applications wanting its power. The team has already used the technology on LCD displays, diodes, and to transmit radio signal, but this time they are ready to take out the technology out of the lab.

The findings suggest that 5 nanogenerators working together produce about 1 micro ampere output current at 3 volts about the same voltage generated by two regular AA batteries.

Doctor Wang explains it like this – our bodies can convert chemical energy from glucose to mechanical energy in form of our muscles. Now these nanogenerators can convert our mechanical energy into electrical energy for powering devices, like iPods or cell phones. Does that mean the fitter our bodies are, the better charged our devices will be?

But don’t get impatient, because the chip is not entering the market very soon. But when it comes, it sure will change some ways of our lives. This surreal idea will be coming to life and I think it is a small way to beat global warming as well. So something actually cordless and battery less is on our way and I am ready to welcome it with my full zest. We can thank our hearts for ticking.
