Eco Factor: Sustainable building features on-site solar generation and water-saving systems.
The Kroon Hall is a new building at Yale that is committed to energy savings to promote a green environment. The hall, which is home of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, consumes 81 percent less water and 58 percent less energy than other comparable buildings.
The LEED Platinum-certified building has been designed by Hopkins Architects and it also generates about 25 percent of its electricity needs from solar panels installed on the building’s roof. Moreover, solar hot water heats about half of the portable water.
A storm water collection system has been integrated that also takes wastewater from sinks and showers, which after filtration is used for landscaping. During construction, about 16 percent of the materials were recycled, and 34 percent came from regional sources. A major share of the wood used in the construction process was also certified by the FSC.
