Eco Factor: Sustainable lamp gets powered by algae.

The Latro lamp is the brainchild of industrial designer Mike Thompson, who is using the technology developed by scientists from Yonsei University and Stanford University to power a lamp. Algae has long been cited as the next super fuel due to the high concentration of lipid oils, but recent research enabled scientists to draw a small electrical current from chloroplasts of algal cells.

The Latro is a living, breathing product that requires sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to provide illumination. All the user has to do is to breathe into the handle of the lamp to provide the algae with CO2 and add some water. Placing this jar-shaped lamp in the sun generates electricity, which is stored in an onboard battery ready to be called upon during hours of darkness.
