Eco Factor: Technology to harness sound waves and convert them into electricity being developed.

Gone are the days when your cellphone’s battery drained with every call you receive, scientists from Korea are developing just the opposite and are working on next-gen technology that can power your cellphone with sound. The research team is using a layer of zinc oxide nanowires sandwiched between two electrodes to generate electricity.

With an ability to generate electricity from sound, the current prototype can only generate about 50mV, which is considerably lower than the voltage required by cellphones. However, with some more work, the research could eventually lead to cellphones that can harness your endless chatters for energy and keep your phone charged without using any energy from the grid.
