Eco Factor: Wind-powered unmanned boat.

Scientists at UK’s Aberystwyth University have developed a 3m long unmanned boat which aims to become the first unmanned vessel to cross the Atlantic. The boat, dubbed Pinta, is equipped with onboard sensors and a GPS system that allow it to sail a computer-set course to the Caribbean.

The Pinta is equipped with small solar panels that help generate all the electricity the onboard sensors and computers require. Propelled only by the wind, the small boat should reach its destination in three months’ time, provided it doesn’t succumb to the harsh weather conditions it is expected to face.
