KnowYourPlanet attempts to turn Kenya towards solar power in a profitable fashion

It is sad to see how most of Africa and South East Asia has not yet turned towards solar energy in a more aggressive and proactive fashion. Considering the abundant and perennial sunshine in both the regions along with wide areas that are either poorly connected to grid power or are completely detached, it makes plenty of sense to turn towards the power of the sun. There are two strong reasons, which are proving to be a hindrance for solar power in the region. One is the cost of photovoltaic panels and the other is the lack of technical know how and awareness. KnowYourPLanet went to Kenya trying to overcome both.

Building a solar cottage industry in Kenya

The main intention of KnowYourPLanet and a team led by Mark Kragh before they left for Kenya was to make 100 solar powered phone chargers during their stint. In the process they also wanted to train the locals and create a solar power cottage industry in the region that can not only promote sustainable power, but also help young Kenyan boys make some profit. While they ended up making solar chargers for mobiles in a lot less number, they did end up training a dedicated team of locals who are now continuing the manufacturing process even after the team left the country.

The project aimed at showing the locals the power of solar energy and how they need not depend on diesel generators to charge their mobiles. Most locals have to make a journey of several miles just to get their cell phones charged, but with the new solar chargers, they can now get plenty of power close to their homes. The team from KnowYourPLanet will travel once again in a few months to Kenya to check on the progress the local team has made on solar charger manufacturing and will teach another group in a far more effective manner, thanks to the insights they have gained in the last trip.

The project is a wonderful example of economic and ecological gains one can make by going green and it showcases the importance of active local denizens in bringing eco friendly solutions to life.
