The green march is in its springs now days. Every entity, starting from an individual to a corporation, is striving in its own unique way to contribute a step in this march. The biggies among the corporate houses are planning huge financial roll outs to aid the environmental cause in some way or the other. IKEA is one such company and its 2011 Sustainability Report affirms its green status. It also throws light on the company’s commitment to eventually use 100 percent renewable energy.

Ikea Towards 100% Renewable energy

The company is fully devoted in accomplishing its goal to turn fully environmentally friendly and get its offices and manufacturing facilities powered entirely by renewable sources of energy. This is reconfirmed by the fact that IKEA has diligently planned to invest an amount as huge as $670 million towards green power generation arrangements for its offices and manufacturing units. Presently, the company holds the honor of being a staunch contributor towards the energy crisis salvation by virtue of its huge renewable energy portfolio that includes 69 wind turbines and over a hundred projects in photovoltaic electricity generation.

More color was added when the company declared its future plans to add 11 new PV solar projects to its current portfolio. The aim is to aid rooftops of each of the brand’s stores with solar PV panels and generate approximately 7000KW of clean energy. The base of this future planning is strengthened by IKEA’s success at the completion of its geothermal project at Denver, Colorado.

The company’s hitched up interest in solar power is almost enchanting. It has already been successful at getting 4,984 solar panels on its store roof at Maryland, generating around 1196 KW of energy. The most important feature is that while other corporations are thriving on the third party power purchase model, IKEA is playing honestly by owning all the installations and operating them personally.
