Hybrid buses in Avon run on Ultra-capacitors

New buses in Avon go hybrid, serving the environment in two ways – it prevents not only air but noise pollution as well. Besides, cutting diesel emissions by half, the bus runs silently, compared to the old ones. Dan Higgins, Avon’s fleet manager justifies it with the metaphor …it runs as quietly as “an overgrown golf cart”…

The hybrid transit bus of Optima Bus Corp. has its first purchase by Avon. The bus contributes hugely towards the environment, as it not only needs half as much fuel needed to run a bus, but also gives a gas mileage in double.

Unlike the battery-run hybrid buses, this new model runs on ‘ultra-capacitors’. Avon will be receiving the new hybrids in the fall. Costing only $7,000, the model will last for up to 10 years. The problem of gererating waste in this vehicle is also reduced, as unlike batteries, the capacitors of the model can be entirely rebuilt.
