Eco Factor: New device generates energy from falling wastewater.

Tom Broadbent, an industrial design student at Leicester’s De Montfort University (DMU), has developed the HighDro Power device which helps generate renewable energy from falling waste. The use of the word ‘high’ instead of ‘hy’ as in hydro, points towards the source of energy.

The machine harnesses tremendous amount energy from waste water falling through drain pipes of high rise buildings. The water goes down the pipe and hits four turbine blades that drive one generator. Tom devised this apparatus to make a dent in overall carbon dioxide emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

According to Tom, once installed in the building HighDro Power can save around US$1,410 or else the energy generated can simply be sold back to the national grid on a buy-back tariff.
