Off late Hawaii has been in the spotlight, mostly because of their recent sea-water air conditioning and solar water heating in new homes. Rumors are that the state might get micro-algae facility for production of biodiesel. Announced yesterday was a partnership of HR Petroleum with Alexander & Baldwin, Hawaiian Electric and Maui Electric to pursue development of an algae facility next to the Ma’alaea power plant on the island of Maui.

Micro-algae growth is perfect in Hawai as the state has abundant sunlight, good supply of crystal clear water, absence of pollution, absence of excessive temperature fluctuations. All these represent optimal conditions under which healthy algal can be grown year-round.

On the announcement of this partnership the Hawaii governor Linda Lingle also said that, investments in renewable projects such as this are part of the comprehensive solution to provide energy alternatives for the state. Still in the planning stage this green project will come into existence in 2011.
