Eco Factor: Device harnesses waste heat to reduce electricity consumption.

Haier has unveiled a new system at SinoCES that captures waste heat from shower water and transfers energy to the hot water tank. Dubbed PowerPad, the device is claimed to harness 15 percent of the energy coming out of the faucet, which will be improved to up to 30 percent when the device goes on sale six weeks from now.

While not many technical details are available about the working of the PowerPad, the device is expected to work like a “heat exchanger.” The 30 percent efficiency rating doesn’t seem to challenge any laws of thermodynamics, but will not be easy to achieve. The PowerPad is expected to hit the Chinese market in a couple of months from now at a price of about $600.
