Eco Factor: Sustainable solar shading system to generate renewable energy as well.

GHD has developed a landmark concept that can radically cut energy in high-rise buildings and also generate renewable solar energy as well. The external shading system sits like a skin on the outside of a building, moving around on tracks to shield the sun while still allowing daylight to penetrate.

Made from a lightweight frame incorporating photovoltaic cells, the sunshield can reduce energy required to light and cool the building by 30 percent. Moreover, the PV cells generate enough energy to power the movement of the shade and provide up to 10 percent of the building remaining power needs.

The system is to be made from a simple and cost-effective series of series of modular panels that can be removed individually without compromising the whole system. The developers estimate that mounting the sunshade system on a 40,000sqm tower will be able to reduce CO2 emissions by 600 tons and generate about 1000MWh of electricity annually.
