Enjoy your Halloween but remember to green it too!

What’s a Halloween with those scarily carved and lit pumpkins that haunts and greets every visitor on the eerie night? Millions of pumpkins are sold across the country for the celebrations on the 31st October. Once the celebrations are over, these pumpkins are generally packed in plastic bags and trashed out resulting in over-loading the landfills adding to the pollution.

This autumn, however TV presenter Philippa Forrester, in the Recycle Now Home Composting campaign is encouraging the citizens of Cumbria to have an eco-friendly Halloween by recycling the pumpkins in an eco-friendly manner. The campaign suggests that the citizens prepare delicious recipes such as pumpkin lasagne, pumpkin soup or pumpkin pie from the insides of the pumpkins.

All unused parts of the pumpkin like the seeds and outer shells may be added to the home composting bin where they will break down slowly and provide a nitrogen rich fertilizer adding nutrition to their garden soil.

Don’t have a compost bin at home then you could buy them online for £8. Enjoy a ‘green’ Halloween this time.
