Eco Tech: Tal-Ya saves water by irrigating plants with dew

Eco Factor: Dew collectors reduce the amount of water required for irrigation, protect plants from weeds.

Israel-based start-up Tal-Ya Water Technologies has announced a new product that squeezes dew from the air for watering crops. The system is intended to be used in areas where water sources are precious and scarce. The system costs just $1 apiece for one plant and can easily be reused after the plant has been cropped.

Made from a special plastic composite that sits directly onto the ground, the system is actually a tray that carries a hole in the center for the plant to grow. An aluminum additive helps the tray respond to the erratic changes in temperatures during day and night. As night falls the tray collects dew and routes it directly to the plant’s roots, thereby saving water.

The system’s ability to water the roots directly makes it so efficient that the designers claim that it can amplify 1mm of rain so that it equals 27mm. Apart from saving water, the dew collectors also destroy weeds, since they block the sun, stopping the weeds from taking root.
