Eco Factor: Lithium sulfur batteries enhance storage capacity by three times.
Lithium-sulfur batteries have for long attracted scientists and researchers who want to increase the storage capacity of batteries that could revolutionize electric cars by making them faster and enhance their operating range as well. Sulfur offers a higher energy density when coupled with lithium, which accounts for the exponential growth in storage capacity. However, keeping sulfur in the most intimate contact with a conductor, such as carbon is needed for the reaction to work perfectly, something which researchers weren’t able to do previously.
Researchers at the University of Waterloo have announced that they have succeeded in making sulfur remain in contact with carbon by using a mesoporous carbon nanotube with melted sulfur in between the tube. This composite material can supply up to nearly 80% of the theoretical capacity of sulfur which is three times the energy density of lithium transition metal oxide cathodes.
